Abstract:The effect of single-fruit bagging (TD), 402D (Decco) commercial coating agent, edible candelilla-carnauba wax coating (EC), or beeswax-candelilla wax coating (BC) on the postharvest storage quality of ‘Taenon’ passion fruits was herein evaluated. Throughout the storage period, the TD-treated group presented the lowest fruit weight loss rate and the best water retention effect, but the decay rate, respiration intensity and fruit odor content were higher; by day 18 of storage, the decay rate of the TD samples was up to 74.66%. The 402D, EC, and BC coatings were all conducive to preserving the color and luster of the fruit surface to some extent, while also delaying the decline of fruit hardness, and decreasing the fruit weight loss rate, decay rate, and respiration intensity. Among them, the BC-treated group had the most significant effect; by day 18 of storage, the weight loss rate and decay rate of the BC samples were only 15.48% and 40.00%, respectively, which were significantly lower than that of the no treatment (CK) group. The soluble solids, titratable acid, and vitamin C content of fruits in all treatment groups showed fluctuating changes, with the titratable acid in the CK group showing the most marked decrease. In summary, the comprehensive effect of the BC treatment was superior to that of other treatments, which maintained the higher quality of fruits during postharvest storage, thus prolonging their shelf life. Therefore, BC coating agent can be used as a green, safe, environmentally friendly and efficient treatment method to improve the quality of passion fruit during postharvest storage.
