Abstract:Postharvest litchi fruit is highly susceptible to pericarp browning, water loss, and microbial spoilage, whereas the relatively fixed mass-transfer properties of conventional packaging are poorly suited to the dynamic changes occurring in the storage microenvironment. To systematically summarize advances in intelligent packaging for litchi preservation, a narrative review was conducted based on studies retrieved from Web of Science Core Collection, Scopus, ScienceDirect, Google Scholar, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wanfang Data, and relevant patent databases, with particular emphasis on gas regulation and monitoring, stimuli-responsive controlled-release packaging, and intelligent colorimetric and sensing technologies. Overall, intelligent packaging shows considerable potential for microenvironment regulation, on-demand release, and quality monitoring of litchi; however, the relationships between response signals and actual fruit quality, as well as between release dosage and preservation efficacy, remain to be further clarified. A synthesis of the available evidence indicates that future research should shift from simply improving individual material properties toward achieving coordinated matching among mass transfer, active-substance release, quality-related signals, fruit respiration, and the progression of quality deterioration. Further advances in multi-parameter sensing, standardized evaluation, and validation under realistic cold-chain conditions are therefore needed to support the precise design and industrial application of intelligent packaging for litchi preservation.
