Abstract:Cadmium pollution is a global public health issue. Cadmium is easy to be accumulated in the human body through the food chain, which seriously harms human health. Cadmium exposure can lead to oxidative stress, inflammatory responses, apoptosis and other liver health issues. Polysaccharides haves various biological activities, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, liver-protecting, heavy metal-adsorbing functions, and come from a wide range of sources with a high safety. In this review, the functionss and mechanisms of polysaccharides in alleviating cadmium-induced liver damage are reviewed from the following six aspects: reducing cadmium accumulation, maintaining intestinal barrier and regulating intestinal flora homeostasis, alleviating oxidative stress, immune damage andinflammatory response, and regulating lipid metabolism. This review can enhance the understanding of the protective mechanism of polysaccharides against cadmium-induced liver damage, and provides ideas for highvalue processing and utilization of polysaccharide resources.
